True Costs of Food Database: Documentation and User Manual

The True Costs of Food Database is out now. Developed by TMG in collaboration with the True Price Foundation, this is the world’s first publicly available food database to use a True Cost Accounting (TCA) approach. It gives production-related environmental and health impact data for more than 2,000 food products consumed in the EU and sourced from 81 countries. These impacts are then translated into true costs, using two established monetization approaches, from True Price and CE Delft. The database was developed as part of the Horizon Europe project PLAN’EAT, which seeks to facilitate the transition towards healthy and sustainable dietary behaviour. The database is a key tool that can inform the transition to sustainable food systems in various ways, including facilitating the development of sustainable and healthy dietary guidelines, informing about the hidden cost of food products or canteen menus, or supporting further research. The database and the accompanying documentation and user manual are open access. Find them here, alongside further information about the database.
