'No one should suffer from hunger, there is enough food', said Alexander Müller, Founder and Managing Director of TMG – Think Tank for Sustainability, in a recent interview with the Tagesspiegel with regard to the Global Food Security Summit, where leaders, politicians and policymakers gathered in London to discuss the global food security crisis and ways to help boost efforts to achieve Zero Hunger and end malnutrition.

He also highlights that through the overexploitation of soil, biodiversity and water, we are destroying the natural capital that we need to secure our food supply. In his opinion, we need to reassess the requirements for global food security, including an overhaul of "business as usual".

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has released its 2023 flagship report, State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA2023), analysing that the hidden costs of global agrifood systems amount to at least $10 trillion, almost 10% of global GDP. TMG was a member of the advisory board and was responsible for a background report on the relevance of True Cost Accounting (TCA) for the private sector.

'The true costs of our food system are astronomically high. We must finally stop lying to ourselves,' Müller explains in his interview for the German newspaper Die Zeit.

Together with universities, companies and NGOs, TMG is researching how TCA can create a framework for sustainable economies and food systems. Further information can be found here.
