Nurturing nature: Identifying Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) initiatives to build social and political support for EbA upscaling in Guatemala

Guatemala remains highly vulnerable to climatic shocks, despite a multitude of climate change adaptation projects. Comprehensive knowledge and information about these projects and their impacts on people and the environment is fragmented. National level decision-makers are rarely aware of successful local adaptation practices and the contributions these can make to achieving global commitments, such as the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda (SDGs). With the intention to create more social and political support from multiple actors to upscale effective ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) practices, the Climate-SDGs Integration project is identifying and studying EbA initiatives in various areas of the country.

Making communities’ voices count in the fight against climate change

Between 2002 and 2017, the number of environmental activists murdered worldwide increased fourfold, and in 2018 alone 164 environmental activists were murdered. This was one of the many distressing facts discussed at the 2019 Global Landscapes Forum, held in Bonn, Germany from June 21-22. The goal of the GLF 2019 was to act as a platform for the voices of the most marginalized groups in the global environmental crisis. These include local communities, women, youth, and especially Indigenous Peoples.

Insights from a side-event on how to improve donor-funded projects to create an enabling environment for upscaling EbA, organized back-to-back with the Global Soil Week (GSW) 2019 by the IKI-funded “Climate-SDG Integration Project” implemented in Guatemala and India.

Nature-based solutions are increasingly recognized as providing “crucial response(s) to climate change and sustainable development at the scale and pace that is needed,” also being proposed as the overarching theme during the upcoming UN Climate Summit in September 2019.
