TMG Think Tank for Sustainability

Jane Weru

Jane Weru is Executive Director and Founder Member of Akiba Mashinani Trust (AMT), a non-profit organization working on developing innovative community led solutions to housing and land tenure problems for the urban poor in Kenya. AMT is the financing facility of the Kenya Federation of Slum Dwellers (Muungano wa Wanavijiji). Since August 2018, Jane Weru has served as Project leader of the Mukuru Special Planning Area, a project of the Nairobi County Government that aims to implement an integrated development plan co-designed with local communities and a consortium of community organizations working in the sprawling informal settlement. The aim is to improve the lives of the 100,000 households that presently occupy over 600 acres of land within the city. Jane is a lawyer by profession and holds a Master’s degree in NGO Management from the London School of Economics. Her early work focused on public interest litigation on behalf of poor communities threatened with forceful evictions and violent demolitions.
